Waterloo Village is just outside Freetown, on the west coast of Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Launch Night

Our launch night was held on Friday 14th May 2004 at The Lord Mayors' of Cardiff official residence. The Lord & Lady Mayor greeted all the guests who were offered liquid refreshment on arrival. Guests entered the manor to the beautiful sound of Richard West playing the piano in the drawing room.

Most people enjoyed browsing the display boards that were in the hall, learning about our aims etc.

The conference room was the venue for the video, preceded by a welcoming speech by The Lord Mayor and Helen Gough followed by and introduction by Yaina Samuels. The video was well received and enjoyed rapturous applause.

Kachi Okezie grabbed the attention of the audience by inviting them all to play a simple game which illustrated partnership working. After having seen the video, one of our guests was so moved by it that he kindly donated the cost of the container, roughly £3000. Food was served up next, consisting of a delicious African stew, rice & accompanying garlic bread.

The meal proved extremely popular throughout which, fundraising took the form of a raffle that saw many happy winners.
The sounds of The Cougar band, situated at the top of the stairs, drifted down to the hallway as people started to bid their farewells and express their appreciation of a wonderful evening.

The end to a successful night

A wonderfully successful evening drew to a close.

However, there was still our Treasurer working hard in the kitchen.

Behind the scenes...

Our thanks go to the following for ensuring our launch night was such a huge success:

The former Lord & Lady Mayor of Cardiff - for the use of their home.

Broadstroke Productions - for producing a video of the evening.

Cathedral Hotel - for the generous donation.

Kachi - for his speech & total support.

Promo Cymru & Dep Cult - for organizing the visual displays.

Richard West - the gifted young pianist.

The Cougar Band - for their African tunes.

Delphus - for this website.

The West African state of Sierra Leone emerged from a decade of civil war in early 2002, with the help of Britain, the former colonial power, and a large United Nations peacekeeping mission.

More than 17,000 foreign troops disarmed tens of thousands of rebels and militia fighters in the biggest UN peacekeeping success in Africa for many years after debacles in the 1990s in Angola, Rwanda and Somalia.
